About Us
Lee Elementary School of Lee, Florida, in Madison County, was established before
the turn of the twentieth century to meet the educational needs of the students
in a small rural farming community. The building itself burned at one time in its
history but was rebuilt in 1947. The students and staff are in their fifth year
of enjoying a new, modern facility, which was completed in 2002. The school is located
approximately 7 miles east of Madison, which is the county seat. The community is
very small with approximately 400 residents living within the city limits. The town
of Lee boasts one “blinking” light, a couple of convenience stores, one restaurant,
and three churches. It is only a short drive to either Tallahassee or Jacksonville.
Because of the proximity, many residents either drive to Live Oak or Valdosta, Georgia,
to do their shopping or to receive medical attention.
When Lee Elementary School was established, it served grades 1-12. Because of better
transportation, declining numbers of students, and economic feasibility, the school
has downsized to a PreK-5th grade school. When students complete 5th grade, they
transfer to the countywide middle school, Madison County Central. Lee Elementary
School continues to have the reputation around the county as being a “good” school.
Traditionally, "Lee School", as its alumni refer to it, has helped set the academic
standards for the county.
Although money is always an issue in education, parents help decrease the gap by
purchasing equipment and up-to-date books and supplies. An extremely active Parent
Teacher Organization has been very instrumental in raising funds to supplement the
purchase of playground equipment and the purchase of teacher supplies not covered
under allocations. In addition, the PTO provides academic incentives to the students,
among which is the AR Store, which allows students to purchase items based on the
number of points they earn from reading Accelerated Reader books. The school has
been and remains the hub of the community. It reflects the motto of the community
itself, "Little But Proud."
